Do You Feel Like You Live in a Tiny Space?

Every homeowner, at one time or another, has felt that their space is too small, as if the walls were literally closing in on them.  But the good thing with space, is that it is what you make of it!  There are a lot of little insider tricks of the trade that can help a small room, feel larger.  Below are our top three!

  1. Furniture Layout.  Real quick, go to your “too small room” and look at how you have your furniture arranged.  A simple thing like dividing a room with furniture or having too much furniture on one side can make a huge difference!

Favorite tip: move furniture a few inches away from the wall, it will give the illusion that there is more space between the wall and the furniture, therefore, creating more room!

  1. Work WITH the room.  Have you ever tried fitting a round peg into a square hole?  Working against the grain tends to be more work than necessary.  So, work smarter, not harder!  For example, if you have a longer room, highlight the length of it.

Favorite tip: If you’re renovating your kitchen, make the countertops the length of the room.  It gives the illusion that the room is longer AND you’ll be avoiding dead space.

  1. The Walls tell it All!  What you hang on your walls, either curtains or art, can make or break a room.  There are a lot of fun, simple things that you can do to make the room appear larger.  For example, hang your pictures lower so that the ceiling looks higher.

Favorite tip: Curtains: Going without curtains can make a room look bigger, but may take away from privacy.  BUT, you can still use your curtains to get rid of that “too small” feeling.  By hanging them higher than the trim and installing longer curtain rods, you’ll give the illusion that the windows are bigger than they actually are.  Plus, you’ll let in more light, and brighter rooms always feel bigger.

If you’re like us, you’ve probably already started mentally rearranging, redecorating and redesigning your “too small room”.  There are many more tips, but we would love to see what you have used to make your small rooms look big!  Post to our Facebook or Instagram any ideas that you have used.   And if you’re still at a loss as to how to make that room look bigger, before the first potential buyers come in, then contact us!  We’ll work with the age and style of your house, and can offer our pieces or stage your very own.
